Mostly black with a golden mane about the shoulders. Head and body length: 8 - 13 inches. Tail length: 12 - 15 inches. Weight: 21 - 28 ounces.

Range

South America: Bahia state of Brazil.

Ecology

Habitat
Primary tropical forest and secondary forest.
 
Niche
Diurnal, arboreal and primarily insectivorous and frugivorous. The diet consists of spiders, snails, small lizards, bird's eggs, small birds, gums and nectar.

Life History

These animals live in family groups of 2 - 8, usually 3 - 4 individuals. The adult female and male of the group form a permanent bond, are usually dominant, and share responsibility for raising young. Gestation lasts 125 - 132 days. The female gives birth to 1 - 3 young with an average lifespan of 15 years.

Special Adaptations

  • A cooperative effort in caring for the young, between the parents and juvenile members of the group, help insure the survival of the next generation.
  • The tamarin's long tail aids in balance and is essential to their arboreal lifestyle.
